Rajinikandh Ars is a corporate lawyer with over 16 years of diversified experience in corporate and commercial law specialising in technology, media and telecommunications (TMT), mobile wallets, retail banking, real property, and insolvency and bankruptcy laws.

Mr Ars currently works as Vice President, Legal at Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC India), a not-for-profit joint industry body. He has successfully set up the legal and secretarial function for BARC – the world’s largest television audience measurement system.

His earlier assignment was with Vodafone India as General Manager, Legal. Mr Ars was associated with the company for 12 years in various roles in culturally diverse regions with responsibility for legal and regulatory functions. He has won landmark litigation for Vodafone India in tax, commercial, civil and criminal law disputes. He has advised on distribution and retailing of telecom, cloud, broadband, handsets, machine to machine (M2M) and mobile wallet services. He has contributed to projects involving the expansion of mobile wallet platforms in rural areas, launching 4G and 3G services in three telecom circles and the merger of Vodafone with Idea. He has won two Vodafone Global Legal Awards.

He practised law for three years before courts prior to starting his in-house practice.
Rachna Bakhru

Rachna Bakhru heads the dispute resolution practice of RNA, Technology and IP Attorneys, a specialist IP law firm. She qualified as a science graduate from Delhi University, subsequently receiving a diploma in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in law from Delhi University. She has over 15 years of extensive experience in patent and tademark contentious matters. She has worked on portfolios of large international companies, and her industry expertise includes pharmaceuticals and information technology. She advises her clients on issues related to data protection, software piracy, domain disputes and online infringement.

Prior to joining RNA, she worked for 10 years at the leading international IP consultancy firm Rouse, heading the Dispute Resolution Team for India. She has authored a number of articles for leading IP publications analysing challenges in enforcing and protecting pharmaceutical trademarks, issues surrounding grant of patents for pharmaceutical preparations and the changing landscape of the IPR environment.

Ms Bakhru is a member of the Bar Council of India, the Chair of INTA’s Unreal Campaign Subcommittee and a registered Patent Agent.

Dr Barse works as a research scientist at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi, and is associated with the DBT Bio energy project. He deals with IPR issues (specifically in the biofuel domain). He is also engaged in licence and agreement, and joint venture collaboration with various chemical and biochemical companies in India and abroad.

Dr Barse previously worked as a scientist in NIPER, Mohali, India, where he was engaged in research and development area, specifically in the green chemistry domain, one of the rapidly growing fields at the interface of chemistry and biology.

He was awarded a prestigious MIUR Fellowship for Young Indian Researchers by the government of Italy in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology where he earned vast experience in specific ion effects on biological molecules, synthesis and characterisation of nanoporous silica particles with various functionality and pore size. He has strong written and oral communication skills, supervising research trainee, MTech and PhD scholars.

Sheetal Chopra has over 19 years of industry experience in international trade, research and advocacy, and policy development at domestic and international level. She has assisted government in design, development, negotiation, consensus building and implementation of international trade laws, international regulations and policy that could lead to sustainable development of the Indian and international economy. She is currently an India Lead for IPR Advocacy at Ericsson.
She is a Registered Patent Agent and author of A Book on Indian Patenting System and Patent Agent Examination published by Notion Press. She has also published an online book for school and college students on Intellectual Property Talent Search Examination (IPTSE.com).

She has deep experience working with and for the industry. Prior to joining Ericsson, she served at the Confederation of Indian Industry, Vodafone, the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Ranbaxy Research Labs. She is a guest faculty/trainer in various premier governmental and non-governmental institutions and is an eminent speaker in various forums on diverse IP issues.

Vivek Doulatani has more than ten years of experience in the field of intellectual property. He has set up and is driving the department of intellectual property at Ather Energy, which is involved in research, design, development and manufacturing of India’s first intelligent electric scooter and charging infrastructure. His current role includes strategising the intellectual property portfolio, integrating the IP process into the product development process, setting up IP road-map and setting up a dynamic IP strategy that reads on the corporate strategy. He has filed six patent applications as an inventor. He has published many papers and has spoken in various conferences. He also helps in creating IP awareness in IITs and other engineering colleges by delivering talks, giving guidance and helping them draft and file patent applications. He holds a master’s degree in intellectual property and a master’s degree in automotive engineering. His current interest is in studying the confluence of patent law, competition law and contract law from a standard-essential patent (SEP) standpoint. Outside the IP world, he loves sky watching and scuba diving.

She develops and implements patent strategy, including identifying patentable inventions, securing high-quality and strategic patent assets, portfolio development, providing expert technical and legal analysis, and managing all aspects of portfolio management for GSuite. She is focused on growing the highest quality portfolio for Gsuite.

Ms Gandotra has more than 11 years’ experience in patents. She is skilled in patent portfolio and patent lifecycle management including innovation management, patent portfolio analysis, patent search, patent preparation, patent prosecution and patent law, primarily in the United States and Europe. At the helm of Juniper’s legal function, Ms. Gupta is a leading privacy and technology lawyer with over 18 years of experience in the IT & ITES sector. Prior to joining Juniper Networks, she was Head Legal of Airbus Group India advising on business and transactional matters including Bizlab, Airbus’ start-up incubator. Her major achievement there was setting up the first Airbus Flight Training Center in India. Previously, Kavitha was Head Legal, Asia Pacific of Hitachi Consulting overseeing the legal function for APAC region, which encompasses IT and cloud computing contracts, global compliance and employment matters. She also worked with Wipro Technologies in the Compliance team heading global compliance for the Americas and then in the Commercial Contract team for Wipro Infotech for the India region. Ms Gupta is a Certified Privacy Professional for Asia from IAPP and on the committee of the India Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel. She received an Appreciation for her valuable contribution to privacy and cybersecurity from Justice BN Srikrishna at the General Counsel Summit on 19 July 2019 and ‘Young Women General Counsel of the Year, 2015’ award from the legendary Shri Ram Jethmalani, Senior Counsel, at the INBA 66th National Law Day on 26 November 2015 in New Delhi.

Arshad Jamil is an Indian Patent Attorney with extensive experience in the legal and IP rights fields. He is Chief IP Counsel and Global Head of IP Rights at Biocon Biologics India Limited, where he is responsible for the company’s patent and trademark filings and policy, and handles global litigation for biosimilars. Mr Jamil manages Biocon’s IP portfolio of more than 1,100 patents and 650 trademarks globally.

Previously, Mr Jamil was a Senior Patent Attorney at Sun Pharma, where he handled abbreviated new drug application litigation, including Hatch-Waxman settlements. He has a BE from Mysore University (1991) and an LLB from Chaudhary Charan Singh University (formerly Meerut University) (1998). In 2014 he completed the SP Jain Institute of Management and Research postgraduate executive management programme. He is a distinguished speaker at national and international IP forums and has been recognised by the IAM Strategy 300 in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

He was Alstom’s first IP Counsel in India and instrumental in setting up the IP department, policies and workflow. He is also involved with engineering teams on targeted IP generation based on innovation inputs, analysing patent portfolios of product lines, competition and future market requirements.

He is also involved in licensing and technology transfer agreements, standardised legal documentation in relation to IP clauses in sales and supply chain agreements, development agreements, employment agreements and non-disclosure agreements.

Mr Schneider is an IBM ‘master inventor’ with more than 40 pending and granted patents. His research focus includes design patterns, programming models and languages and augmented intelligence as it applies to patent analytics. In 2016 he was inducted into the IBM Academy of Technology.

As an electronic engineer with a degree in law, Mr Sharma takes a keen interest in the latest developments in technology and the interplay between law and technology. Before joining Dolby, Mr Sharma worked at various firms and has extensive experience in patent litigation, patent prosecution and preparation in various domains, including electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering. He has represented clients before various high courts, the Intellectual Property Appellate Board and the Indian Patent Office.

Mr Sharma is keen to spread IP awareness in India and has authored several articles relating to patent law and related issues in IP journals.

Anand Shetty is an organic chemist, law graduate and patent agent. He has worked 5 years in industrial R&D and 16 years as in-house patent attorney at HUL. He is Unilever’s Regional Patents Manager for South-Asia and SE-Asia and has served an international assignment in Shanghai.

He files patents for a variety of inventions and manages their global prosecution. He handles Indian and European patent oppositions and advises R&D about patent risk assessment of new products.

He also manages registration of designs and their cancellation proceedings in India.
He was involved in a variety of patent and designs litigations in India including writs and special leave petitions, as well as in some ADR matters.

Prior to HUL, Mr Shetty was an R&D officer at ICI India Research.

Pankaj Soni has over 20 years’ industry and legal experience. He leads Remfry & Sagar’s patent litigation practice and has litigated matters before courts in India and the US. He has also led client negotiations for litigation settlements and cross-licensing agreements.

Mr Soni is a recognised patent strategist and has advised Fortune 500 companies as well as start-ups on creating and managing IP portfolios and setting up effective patent protection and enforcement strategies in India, especially in the electronics, ICT and telecom domains. He has also provided litigation advisory services to entities in the SEP/FRAND space in India, and helped them formulate strategy on licensing of patent portfolios.

In charge of the US desk at the firm, Mr Soni manages a team of patent prosecution attorneys handling electrical/electronics, computer and mechanical inventions. He has authored several articles on IP and is a sought-after speaker who often shares his insights in forums across the globe.
