Ben Clossick Thomson is a barrister with an academic background in theoretical physics and bioethics. He trained with specialist IP chambers 8 New Square and One Essex Court before joining Milbank Tweed as the founding associate of its IP litigation team. During his time there and subsequently at Arnold & Porter, Mr Clossick Thomson focused his practice on multi-jurisdictional patent litigation in technologies as diverse as mobile telephony to pet food manufacturing. Now global litigation counsel at healthcare company Mylan, Mr Clossick Thomson manages patent litigation, as both patentee and defendant, spanning Australia, Japan, India and Europe.

Catherine Coombes is a commercially minded European and UK Chartered Patent Attorney with more than a decade of experience focusing on the life sciences field. She has a particular interest and considerable experience in securing and upholding patent protection relating to clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) technology, as applied to bacterial systems and, more recently, as a gene editing tool. The transformation of CRISPR systems from their natural function as part of adaptive bacterial immunity to a tool kit to carry out site specific modifications in eukaryotes has led to an explosion of new applications for such technology. Ms Coombes provides a depth of knowledge from working in this highly contentious and constantly evolving field.

Lawrence Cullen is Deputy Director at the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) in the UK, where he leads the team responsible for the search and examination of patent applications in the biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals fields. He and his team also handle the examination of applications for supplementary protection certificates (SPCs). Dr Cullen is a Hearing Officer at the IPO and has been involved in a number of patent and SPC appeal cases before the UK courts and the European Court of Justice. Dr Cullen studied chemistry in Ireland and the United Kingdom and worked as a Research Scientist at various universities in Europe and the United States before joining the IPO as a Patent Examiner in the field of pharmaceuticals. He has worked in a variety of operational and policy roles at the IPO, including as a Hearing Officer dealing with trademark disputes.

In 2017 Sergei Kurkin joined UCB, a global biopharmaceutical company which focuses on creating value for patients living with neurology and immunology conditions. At UCB, Mr Kurkin supports both the research and business organisations on questions regarding patents and contractual matters in the areas of biotechnology and digital technology.

Before joining UCB, Mr Kurkin worked at Galapagos, a leader in the development of innovative medicines with novel modes of action. He spent six years working solely on IP, supporting the company’s biotechnology and antibody portfolio. Before moving into IP, he worked in the areas of informatics and biomedical research at Galapagos and Philips in the Netherlands.

Mr Kurkin has a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Amsterdam and is a qualified European Patent Attorney.

Hannes Iserentant started his IP career in private practice at Bird Goën & Co as member of the life sciences team. In 2008 he moved to VIB, a research institute active in all areas of life sciences. Mr Iserentant was a founding member of the VIB technology watch team and was involved in identifying and securing access to early stage, emerging technologies. In 2013 he was appointed as a member of the European Commission’s expert group on the development and implications of patent law in the field of biotechnology and genetic engineering and acted as rapporteur of the subgroup on topics relating to patents concerning plant-related inventions. Since 2016 Mr Iserentant has been the IP Director of Celyad, a biopharmaceutical company specialised in CAR-T cell therapy, where he is responsible for its IP strategy.

Francesco Macchetta is IP Strategic Advisor & former Director of Intellectual Property at Bracco Imaging SpA. He is past-president of the Italian Association of Patent Attorneys in Industry and vice president of the IP group of Businesseuropa.
Mr Macchetta serves on the Standing Advisory Committee before the European Patent Office (SACEPO) and is a member of the SACEPO Working Party on Rules. He is also a council member of the European Patent Institute (epi), a member of the epi European Patent Practice Committee and a council member of the Italian Institute of Industrial Property Consultants.
Mr Macchetta qualified as a European patent attorney and Italian industrial property consultant in 1985 and passed his US Patent and Trademark Office qualifying examination in 1991. He has more than 35 years’ experience of IP matters in Europe and internationally in the pharma and biotech industry.

Before joining UCB, Ms Melon worked for five years at the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA), which represents the research-based and innovative pharmaceutical industry in Europe. As Director of IP Policy, she coordinated the development of the EFPIA’s IP and innovation policy within and outside the European Union.

Ms Melon has a bachelor's in political sciences and European studies and an LLM in IP law from the Paris Institute of Political Studies, as well as another LLM in European law and economic analysis from the College of Europe in Bruges.

Heli Pihlajamaa is Director of Patent Law at the EPO in Munich. She studied law at Helsinki University and at the Max Planck Institute in Munich. Ms Pihlajamaa acts as a legal member in opposition cases and advises EPO higher management on policy issues and legal amendments. She is responsible for supporting the EPO’s policies by developing, strengthening and promoting the European Patent Convention, including proposals for legal changes, compliance of operations with patent law-related norms and case law. Before joining the EPO, Ms Pihlajamaa worked in both the private and public sectors. She has written several books and articles on patent law in Finnish.
