Ben Clossick Thomson is a barrister with an academic background in theoretical physics and bioethics. He trained with specialist IP chambers 8 New Square and One Essex Court before joining Milbank Tweed as the founding associate of its IP litigation team. During his time there and subsequently at Arnold & Porter, Mr Clossick Thomson focused his practice on multi-jurisdictional patent litigation in technologies as diverse as mobile telephony to pet food manufacturing. Now global litigation counsel at healthcare company Mylan, Mr Clossick Thomson manages patent litigation, as both patentee and defendant, spanning Australia, Japan, India and Europe.

Catherine Coombes is a commercially minded European and UK Chartered Patent Attorney with more than a decade of experience focusing on the life sciences field. She has a particular interest and considerable experience in securing and upholding patent protection relating to clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) technology, as applied to bacterial systems and, more recently, as a gene editing tool. The transformation of CRISPR systems from their natural function as part of adaptive bacterial immunity to a tool kit to carry out site specific modifications in eukaryotes has led to an explosion of new applications for such technology. Ms Coombes provides a depth of knowledge from working in this highly contentious and constantly evolving field.

Hannes Iserentant started his IP career in private practice at Bird Goën & Co as member of the life sciences team. In 2008 he moved to VIB, a research institute active in all areas of life sciences. Mr Iserentant was a founding member of the VIB technology watch team and was involved in identifying and securing access to early stage, emerging technologies. In 2013 he was appointed as a member of the European Commission’s expert group on the development and implications of patent law in the field of biotechnology and genetic engineering and acted as rapporteur of the subgroup on topics relating to patents concerning plant-related inventions. Since 2016 Mr Iserentant has been the IP Director of Celyad, a biopharmaceutical company specialised in CAR-T cell therapy, where he is responsible for its IP strategy.

Siddharth Kusumakar, a senior associate at London-based specialist IP firm Powell Gilbert LLP, advises on all aspects of contentious IP law, with a particular focus on multi-jurisdictional patent litigation for clients in the life science and technology sectors.

Mr Kusumakar is an IP litigator with a strong technical background. He advises clients across a broad range of technologies, particularly in disputes that have an international element and involve complex technical issues. He has particular experience of patent litigation in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device fields, often coordinating simultaneous litigation across Europe and North America.

Mr Kusumakar has represented clients in a number of patent trials, including some of the most high-profile cases to come before the UK Patents Court in recent years.

Dr Lavoie has extensive experience in small-molecule and biologic pharmaceuticals (including antibody technologies and immunotherapies, such as CAR-T therapies), drug formulation and drug delivery technologies, diagnostics, clean and alternative (animal- and environmentally-friendly) food technologies, protein biochemistry and engineering, cell systems engineering, nanotechnologies, plant biotechnology and genomics and green and environmental chemistries. Dr Lavoie also has significant transactional experience in various aspects of IP licensing, including sponsored research, feasibility and development and commercialisation agreements.

Francesco Macchetta is director of intellectual property at Bracco Imaging SpA. He is president of the Italian Association of Patent Attorneys in Industry and vice president of the IP group of Businesseuropa.
Mr Macchetta serves on the Standing Advisory Committee before the European Patent Office (SACEPO) and is a member of the SACEPO Working Party on Rules. He is also a council member of the European Patent Institute (epi), a member of the epi European Patent Practice Committee and a council member of the Italian Institute of Industrial Property Consultants.
Mr Macchetta qualified as a European patent attorney and Italian industrial property consultant in 1985 and passed his US Patent and Trademark Office qualifying examination in 1991. He has more than 35 years’ experience of IP matters in Europe and internationally in the pharma and biotech industry.

He has a PharmD, a PhD, a certificate of aptitude for the legal profession and a diploma in patents from the Centre for International Intellectual Property Studies in Strasbourg. He has 18 years’ experience in the IP field and has worked in the IP service departments of Macopharma Pharmaceutical Laboratory, EGYP and Véron & Associés.

Jonathan Thwaite began his training as a patent attorney in private practice in the United Kingdom in 2003. He moved to Switzerland to work as a European patent attorney in the crop protection team of Syngenta in 2008, before joining Basilea Pharmaceutica Ltd as head of patents in 2014. Mr Thwaite has a PhD in biochemistry from Cambridge University and an MBA from St Gallen University.

Beatriz San Martín is an IP specialist with a focus on the life sciences sector and emerging and disruptive technologies. Prior to pursuing a legal career, she was a Scientist specialising in genetics, cellular and molecular biology. She has a degree, a Wellcome Trust PhD and a post-doctorate fellowship from the University of Cambridge.

Ms San Martín has significant experience litigating before the UK courts and the European Court of Justice, having acted in a number of leading IP cases involving a range of technologies, including medicinal products (small molecules and biologicals), medical devices, mosquito nets, insulation foams, software and medical imaging. She also assisted with the largest ever confidential information case in England and Wales. Ms San Martín counsels on international IP protection and enforcement strategies, IP infringement avoidance, infringement and validity opinions, and licensing issues and provides corporate support on transactions with patent issues.

Anthony Tridico is Managing Partner of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP’s London office. He has worked in Europe for most of his career, gaining significant knowledge of the European Patent Convention and the diversity of laws and practices among the European national systems. Mr Tridico’s knowledge of the various legal systems and how they differ from that of the United States’ allows him to effectively counsel clients across life sciences industries with global IP interests.

Mr Tridico has more than 20 years’ experience representing clients with a focus on patent office trials and appeals (the PTAB and the EPO), patent prosecution management, IP due diligence and litigation. He has experience in various technical areas, including biologics, immunology and biotechnology, chemical and pharmaceutical sciences, polymers and adhesives, food sciences, medical devices and diagnostics and instrumentation.

Mr Tridico has a JD, a PhD and an MS from Georgetown University.
